Name of Stone age cartoon?

What is the name of a cartoon that was on during the 1990s (maybe late 80s) about a boy with red hair (maybe brown/red) who was sent back in time, or was somehow in the stone age. He was friends with a wooly mammoth, and other animals, maybe some more people too. But at the end of the show (and i think the beggining too) it would take place in modern times. A guy or a girl would be telling the story. One or both were black...
